I was recently asked by a journalist for a local paper what my favorite bird was, and that was a more difficult choice than I realized. I just mentioned the first one that popped into mind, but the truth is that I love all birds–the mysterious red-winged blackbird is amongst my favorites, for sure.
My dad inherited his affection of birds from his parents, and he’s passed it along to us. When my husband and I moved to our current home, one of the first things we did was set up our bird feeders. Each is carefully positioned so that we can see our winged friends through the windows from our living room. We’ve grown to become excited when we see someone new join our usual flock of friends.
This summer, I spotted my first red-wing blackbird since moving from Alabama to Georgia. There’s so something striking about that bright splash of red against their otherwise raven feathers.
Red-wing blackbirds symbolize protection, good luck, and even prosperity. They’re a reminder that something else is out there watching over us and guiding us when necessary.
The Mysterious Red-winged Blackbird Chitimacha Native American Folklore
They are associated with some interesting folklore, too. According to Katherine Judson’s Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes, published in 1916, the red-winged blackbird came to have its striking red spot because of its gallant nature. Lore has it that once upon a time, a man grew frustrated and tired of his life. In his anger, he decided to set the marsh on fire, thinking he could burn the world that had made him so miserable. A little blackbird saw what was happening and called out to the townspeople. It screamed, “The world and all is going to burn!” The angry man threw a shell and hit the bird in the wings, causing them to bleed.
The townspeople came and put out the fire and ate the game the fire had driven out of the marsh. All ended well in the end, and the blackbird forever wore the mark of its honorable deed.

The Red-winged Blackbird Symbolism
In general, when you see a red-winged blackbird, it’s a positive sign. It symbolizes change and inner strength. It’s known to symbolize a mastery of arts and justice, as well. Red-winged blackbirds will remain amongst my favorites because of their lore and symbolism. I can’t say for sure if they bring good luck, but I feel lucky to see them when I do.
