There’s a common paranormal phenomenon on some of Ohio’s bridges. Legend has it that if you stop your car in the middle of a crybaby bridge, you’ll hear the ghostly cries of a baby. In some urban legends, the baby is tossed over the bridge, and the mother later kills herself. In other tales, the mother and child are killed in a car accident.
There are several versions of spectral encounters. Some see the baby crawling on the side of the road, and others claim that the mother appears in the backseat of the car as it drives over the bridge.
The Crybaby Bridges of Ohio
One of the most popular crybaby bridges is in Rogues’ Hollow, near Doylestown, Ohio. Stories say a family perished there after their car was wrecked because of an icy road. It’s said that if you stop your vehicle there during freezing conditions, you’ll hear a baby’s cries wailing in the distance. The Greely Chapel Road Bridge in Lima, Ohio, is haunted by a baby with a rattle. On an abandoned road in Salem, Ohio is a rusted bridge that’s said to be haunted by the cries of a child who suffered an untimely, watery grave. Travelers can hear a baby’s and mother’s cries on the Screaming Bridge of Maud Hughes Road. They may also catch a glimpse of a ghostly train.
If you weren’t afraid of bridges before, you might be now.
